
A ferrite bead and a common-mode choke do not address exactly the same problem. A ferrite bead is often placed in series with one power or signal line. A common-mode choke uses coupled windings to oppose noise flowing in the same direction on multiple conductors while preserving the desired differential signal as far as possible.
Check these seven points
- Measure the noise: identify frequency, source and path before selecting a part.
- Line type: power, low-frequency signals and fast differential data have different needs.
- Noise mode: distinguish common-mode from differential-mode current.
- Impedance versus frequency: one value at 100 MHz does not describe the complete curve.
- Current and DC bias: impedance and temperature can change at operating current.
- DCR and loss: check voltage drop, heating and permitted dissipation.
- Signal integrity and layout: capacitance, leakage inductance, placement and return path matter.
Do not add a filter only because it appears in a reference schematic. Confirm noise mode, frequency, current and line impedance, then measure the result again.
